How Do I Prepare For E-Commerce

An E-Commerce Checklist

Choose & Sign up with a Payment Gateway
If you do not have a payment gateway vendor, you need to select one and set up an account with them. Most popular is Authorize.net and Paypal. Once you set up an account you will need to give us your account info so that we can connect the cart with the Payment Gateway for processing of the credit cards.

Create an Internet Merchant Account
If you don’t already have one, you need to setup an Internet Merchant Account with your bank. They will want certain things in place before they will create the account (step 5 & 6 under “Administrative & Product Steps” and all of the policy documents under “Prepare the following policy documents”).

Administrative & Product Steps

  1. Make sure you have all of your products clearly defined, with descriptions, weights, photos, taxes, shipping, handling and configuration (if needed).
  2. Do you want to offer any discounts to start with or promotions?
  3. Determine if you are charging tax and if so what the tax rate(s) is (are).
  4. Determine how you are going to ship your products. If you use UPS, Fedex or USPS then you can get an XML Access key that will allow you to directly get real-time rates from that carrier. If not then figure out how you want to structure your rates and if you want to charge a handling fee.
  5. Determine the physical address you would like to list on the website.
  6. Determine the customer service email and/or phone number you would like to list.

Prepare the following policy documents

  • Cancellation / Return Policy
  • Delivery Policy
  • Returned Merchandise / Refund Policy
